Physician to Physician Communication Index

Physician communication affects team performance, patient satisfaction, and patient compliance with medical instructions.  Physician communication also has been shown to affect patient outcomes, such as aversion of medical errors and readmissions. The Joint Commission’s root cause analyses reveal that two-thirds or more of sentinel events have their origin in a human communication issue.

Courageous Healthcare’s Physician to Physician Communication Index (P2PC) delivers useful feedback to physicians on their communication strengths and opportunities for improvement. Ideally, P2PC is completed by the 10 people with whom a physician has the most work-related communication. This panel typically includes nurses, support or administrative staff and other physicians. Each panelist provides ratings and feedback to the physician, which are aggregated and delivered confidentially.

P2PC provides scores on five physician communication competencies:

  1. Communication with Patients and Families
  2. Communication with Doctors and Nurses
  3. Communication Attributes of Team Work
  4. Written Communications (SOAP notes)
  5. Telephonic Communications (referrals and consultations)

Aggregate P2PC results can then be brought to a retreat, department meeting, or CME event on communication issues.  Physicians do not need to reveal their own P2PC scores to benefit from the ensuing discussion.  P2PC also solicits open-ended feedback and permits nomination of a model physician communicator. The model communicators in the group can be recognized at the educational event.

Courageous Healthcare can deliver this confidential 360 communication feedback process for you. This process is effectively followed up with our highly engaging, interactive educational event on physician communication. Courageous can efficiently help you submit an application to your source for CMEs. Write or call Richard Bogue at rjb@courageoushealthcare.com or 407-376-3740.
